MP4 uses the H.264 codec, which hardware decodes on every modern device. It streams natively through HTML5 video without plugins. MP4 files are also smaller than FLV at the same quality because H.264 compresses more efficiently than the older VP6 and Sorenson Spark codecs FLV used.
Can FLV Do Anything MP4 Cannot?
No. In 2026, there is no technical advantage to FLV. MP4 matches or beats FLV in every category: compression, quality, streaming, compatibility, and metadata support. The only reason to keep FLV files is if they contain unique content you have not yet converted.
