MP4 vs MOV: Which Video Format Should You Use?

MP4 works everywhere. MOV works best on Apple devices. If you need to share a video and the recipient might be on Windows, Android, or Linux, use MP4. If you are editing on a Mac and staying in the Apple ecosystem, MOV is fine. That is the short answer.

Where They Come From

MOV was created by Apple in 1998 for QuickTime. MP4 was standardized by the MPEG group in 2001, heavily based on the QuickTime container format. Both are container formats, meaning they hold video, audio, and metadata tracks. The codecs inside (H.264, H.265, ProRes) matter more than the container itself for quality.

File Size

When both use the same codec (say H.264), MP4 and MOV produce nearly identical file sizes. The container overhead is negligible. However, MOV files from iPhones and Final Cut Pro often use ProRes or HEVC with less aggressive compression, resulting in larger files. A 1-minute 1080p clip might be 15MB as MP4 (H.264) vs 150MB as MOV (ProRes).

Compatibility

MP4 is the universal standard. Every browser, phone, game console, smart TV, and social media platform supports it. MOV plays natively on macOS and iOS but can cause problems on Windows (requires additional codecs), Android (inconsistent support), and web browsers (limited). If you are uploading to YouTube, Instagram, or TikTok, MP4 is the expected format.

Editing and Professional Use

Professional video editors on Mac often prefer MOV because it supports ProRes, Apple's professional editing codec. ProRes preserves maximum quality during editing with fast decode performance. Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve, and Premiere Pro all handle MOV natively. For the final export meant for distribution, most editors still render to MP4 with H.264 or H.265.
