3GP vs MP4: Quality, Compatibility, and Which to Use

3GP was created for 3G-era mobile phones that had tiny screens and slow data connections. MP4 is the universal video format that works on every modern device. Unless you are dealing with old 3GP files from a feature phone, MP4 is the right choice for everything.
Video Quality
MP4 supports modern codecs like H.264 and H.265 (HEVC), delivering HD, Full HD, and 4K video with efficient compression. 3GP typically uses H.263, an older codec designed for low-resolution video at 176x144 or 320x240 pixels. The quality gap is massive. 3GP was engineered for screens smaller than 2 inches. MP4 handles cinema-quality video on 4K displays.
Audio Quality
MP4 pairs video with AAC audio, which delivers clear sound at low bitrates. 3GP uses AMR-NB (Adaptive Multi-Rate Narrowband) for audio, which was designed for voice calls over cellular networks. AMR-NB sounds acceptable for speech but terrible for music, with a narrow frequency range and audible compression artifacts. For any content beyond voice recordings, MP4 audio is vastly superior.
File Size
3GP files are smaller, but only because the quality is much lower. A 1-minute 3GP clip might be 200-500 KB, while the same content in MP4 at 720p would be 10-30 MB. This size advantage mattered when phones had 16 MB of storage and data speeds were 384 kbps. With modern devices having 128+ GB storage and 5G speeds, the tradeoff no longer makes sense.
Compatibility
MP4 plays on every smartphone, tablet, computer, smart TV, game console, and web browser. It is the default video format for YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and every major platform. 3GP has limited support on modern devices. Most desktop video players can open 3GP files, but many mobile apps and web players cannot. Social media platforms do not accept 3GP uploads.
Converting 3GP to MP4
If you have old 3GP videos from a feature phone or early smartphone, converting them to MP4 preserves the content in a format that will keep working on future devices. The original quality stays the same since you cannot add detail that was never captured, but the file becomes compatible with modern software and platforms.
