Smallest Video Format: Which Has the Smallest File Size?

MP4 with H.264 encoding gives the smallest file sizes with broad compatibility. For even smaller files, MP4 with H.265 (HEVC) cuts size by another 30-50% at the same quality. WebM with VP9 comes close and is royalty-free. The container format (MP4, WebM, MKV) matters less than the codec inside it.

Format Comparison by File Size

For a typical 1-minute 1080p video, here are rough file sizes by codec:

  • H.265 (HEVC) in MP4: ~8-12MB. Best compression available today.
  • H.264 in MP4: ~15-25MB. Most widely supported format across devices.
  • VP9 in WebM: ~10-15MB. Open-source alternative, great for web use.
  • AV1 in MP4/WebM: ~6-10MB. Newest codec with best compression, but slower to encode.
  • AVI (uncompressed): ~150-200MB. Avoid for anything you need to share.

When to Use MP4

MP4 works on virtually every device, browser, and platform. It is the standard for sharing on social media, email, and messaging apps. The Codec Matters More Than the Container

The container (MP4, WebM, MKV) is just a wrapper. The codec (H.264, H.265, VP9, AV1) does the actual compression. An MKV file with H.264 is the same size as an MP4 with H.264. When someone says "MP4 is smaller than AVI," they really mean H.264 encoding is more efficient than older codecs like MPEG-4 Part 2.
