MP3 vs WAV: Quality, File Size, and When to Use Each

MP3 is lossy and small. WAV is lossless and huge. A 3-minute WAV file is roughly 30MB. The same audio as a 128kbps MP3 is about 3MB. That is the core tradeoff: file size versus perfect audio fidelity.

Sound Quality

WAV stores the full, uncompressed audio waveform. Nothing is removed. MP3 uses psychoacoustic modeling to discard sounds most humans cannot perceive, like very high frequencies masked by louder tones. At 192kbps or higher, most listeners cannot distinguish MP3 from WAV in a blind test. Below 128kbps, compression artifacts become noticeable, especially on cymbals, strings, and vocal sibilance.

File Size Comparison

  • WAV (16-bit, 44.1kHz): ~10MB per minute
  • MP3 at 320kbps: ~2.4MB per minute
  • MP3 at 128kbps: ~1MB per minute

When to Use WAV

Use WAV for audio editing and production. DAWs like Audacity, Logic Pro, and Ableton work best with uncompressed audio. Also use WAV for master recordings you want to archive at full quality. When to Use MP3

Use MP3 for sharing, streaming, uploading to websites, and storing large music libraries. MP3 is supported everywhere: every phone, browser, car stereo, and media player.
