How to Compress Podcast Audio Without Losing Voice Quality
Published on March 1, 2026
The fastest way to compress podcast audio is to export as MP3 at 96kbps mono. This cuts file size by 70-80% compared to a stereo WAV file, and listeners will not hear the difference on spoken word content. You can do this instantly with our free audio compressor.
Why Podcast Files Get So Large
A one-hour podcast recorded as stereo WAV at 44.1kHz uses about 600MB. Most podcast hosts cap uploads at 200MB or less, and large files mean slow downloads for listeners on mobile data. Compression solves both problems.
Step 1: Switch to Mono
Most podcasts are spoken word with a single microphone or multiple mics mixed to a center channel. Stereo adds zero value here. Converting to mono cuts file size in half immediately. Your listeners are mostly on earbuds or phone speakers anyway.
Step 2: Pick the Right Bitrate
- 64kbps mono: Good enough for clean spoken word. Many major podcasts use this. File size is roughly 0.5MB per minute.
- 96kbps mono: Slightly more headroom. Good if your podcast includes music segments or sound effects.
- 128kbps mono: Overkill for most podcasts, but use this if audio quality is a top priority.
For reference, a 60-minute episode at 64kbps mono is about 29MB. At 96kbps mono, it is about 43MB. Both are well within hosting limits.
Step 3: Use MP3 Format
MP3 is the universal podcast format. Every podcast app, RSS reader, and browser supports it. While AAC and OGG offer slightly better compression, MP3 guarantees compatibility across every platform. Stick with MP3 unless your host specifically recommends otherwise.
Quick Compression Workflow
- Export your edited podcast as WAV or high-quality MP3
- Upload to our audio compressor
- Select your target bitrate (64k or 128k)
- Download the compressed file
If you are starting from a WAV file, our WAV to MP3 converter handles the format change and compression in one step. Need to trim silence or intros first? Use the audio trimmer before compressing.
