HEIC vs PNG: Size, Quality, and Compatibility

HEIC produces files 60-70% smaller than PNG while maintaining high visual quality, but works mainly on Apple devices. PNG is lossless, universally supported, and handles transparency perfectly. For iPhone photos, HEIC saves storage. For graphics, screenshots, and cross-platform sharing, PNG is the reliable choice.

File Size

A 12-megapixel iPhone photo saved as PNG weighs roughly 15-25MB. The same image as HEIC is 2-4MB. That is a massive difference driven by HEIC's use of HEVC (H.265) compression, which was designed for video but works well for still images. PNG uses lossless compression that preserves every pixel but produces much larger files. For photo storage, HEIC's size advantage is hard to ignore.

Image Quality

PNG is lossless: what you save is exactly what you get back, pixel for pixel. HEIC uses lossy compression by default but at quality levels high enough that differences are invisible in photographs. Where PNG excels is with graphics that have sharp edges, text, flat colors, and fine lines. HEIC can introduce subtle artifacts in these areas. For screenshots, UI mockups, and diagrams, PNG remains the better format.

Transparency

Both formats support alpha transparency. PNG has been the standard for transparent images on the web for over two decades. HEIC also supports transparency, but since browsers do not render HEIC natively (as of 2026), you cannot use HEIC for web graphics. For any image that needs a transparent background on the web, PNG or WebP is the only practical option.

Compatibility

PNG opens on every device, browser, and application ever made in the last 25 years. HEIC works natively on iOS 11+, macOS High Sierra+, and recent versions of Windows 11 (with the HEVC extension). Android support varies by manufacturer. Most websites, email clients, and social media platforms do not accept HEIC uploads directly. Sending a HEIC file to someone on Windows or Android often means they cannot open it without converting first. For anything you plan to share, converting HEIC to JPG or PNG is usually necessary.

Use Cases

HEIC makes sense as a storage format on iPhones and iPads, where it halves the space used by your photo library without visible quality loss. Apple automatically converts HEIC to JPG when you share photos via AirDrop to non-Apple devices or upload to most services. PNG is the right choice for screenshots, logos, icons, digital art, anything with text overlays, and any image where lossless quality or transparency is required.

Which Should You Use?

Keep your iPhone set to HEIC for storage efficiency. When you need to share or edit photos outside Apple's ecosystem, convert to JPG or PNG. Use PNG for any graphic design work, web assets, or images requiring transparency. If file size is a concern for web images, consider AVIF or WebP as modern alternatives that combine small size with broad browser support.
